How many of you have one of these guys laying (or hanging) around?

Not the most attractive thing, right? I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d never go into someone’s house and think, “UG.LY.” if I saw one, but it’s certainly nothing special.

I knew I wanted to have a most industrial looking fan in our living room, but was decidedly not enjoying the price tags for these guys:

Some time on Pinterest helped me garner some inspiration for a quick little DIY. Although I really spread it out over many more days/weeks than necessary, it could easily be a weekend project.

I started by removing the blades and cleaning the entire fan. Since I scooped this one up for free on OfferUp, it wasn’t in perfect shape. Some of the blades were warped, so I just picked up a new pack at the hardware store. Still cheaper than starting with a whole new fan!

Dirty, kind of ugly, and exactly $0.

I then used my favorite matte black spray paint and got to work. I could have made it easier on myself by further disassembling, but of course I never go the easy route (aka, if I do this again, I will definitely further disassemble).

I added these Edison light bulbs and cages from Amazon:

I paid less that $20 for six — the best price I found anywhere.

The $19 or so that I paid for these four cages was pretty typical, from what I found elsewhere.

I got some much-needed help installing the fan (thanks, Dad!), and I have to say, I’m pretty pleased with how it turned out!

What are you favorite industrial home decor finds?
